Orthopaedic Surgery
Orthopaedic care involves diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system comprises muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones and nerves that provide support and stability that is required for movement.
The orthopaedic conditions assessed and treated by orthopaedic surgeons include, musculoskeletal injuries sustained in accidents, sports related injuries, degenerative disorders, infections, tumours, and congenital disorders.
Orthopaedic treatments may include both non-surgical and surgical methods. The techniques used to treat musculoskeletal problems through orthopaedic care include:
- Traction: Traction utilizes pulleys and weights to treat fractures, joint dislocations and muscle spasm by applying a pulling force to a part of the body;
- Splinting: Devices and casts are used to support, protect, and immobilize the injured bones and soft tissue. This reduces pain and swelling and promotes healing;
- Non-surgical procedures include the use of medications, injections, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, and deep tissue massage;
- Surgical procedures may be required for fractures, ligament tears, degenerative conditions, and various other conditions when non-surgical methods fail.
